How to use it

  1. 1 Pick the odds format your sportsbook shows.
  2. 2 Enter your stake and the odds.
  3. 3 Read the profit and the total return. Total return includes your stake coming back.

Profit versus total return

Sportsbooks and apps use two different numbers for the same bet. Profit is the money you gain. Total return, also called the payout, is profit plus your original stake. A bet with a profit of $90 on a $50 stake pays out $140 in total.

If the bet loses you lose the stake and nothing is returned. If it pushes (ties), most books refund the stake.

How payout changes with the odds

With positive American odds (+180) the number is the profit on a 100 stake, so a 50 stake earns half of 180. With negative odds (-150) the number is the stake needed to earn 100, so a 75 stake earns 50. Decimal odds multiply your stake directly, and fractional odds multiply it by the fraction.

Bigger payouts come with a lower implied chance of winning. The break-even win rate shown under the result is the share of bets at these odds that must win just to avoid losing money.

Worked example

A $50 bet at +180 has decimal odds of 2.80. The profit is $50 x 1.80 = $90.00 and the total return is $140.00. The break-even win rate is 35.71%.

For comparison, a $75 bet at -150 earns $50 profit and returns $125, and a $110 bet at -110 earns $100 profit and returns $210.

The formula

Profit = stake x (decimal odds - 1) Total return = stake x decimal odds +A odds: profit = stake x A / 100 -A odds: profit = stake x 100 / A
